Over this summer, I am working at the local golf course on the grounds crew. The job gives me the opportunity to witness many beautiful natural wonders. This past week Barn Swallows and Pelicans caught my attention. Barn Swallows are a popular bird in our area and they make their presence known every time I am mowing the grass at the golf course. Insects are their main diet for Barn Swallows. The mower disrupts the insects environment and causes them to fly. The Barn Swallows quickly take up this opportunity to catch and eat some of the insects. While I was mowing, a few started flying near me. It did not take long and there was at least 20 of them flying and dodging around around me. It reminded me of the classic shiners in a parade because they look like they are going to run into each other but they never do. Then I started to think about the task of these birds. They are flying at a quick pace, spotting an insect, and then trying to catch the insect with its beak while dodging me and the other birds. It really is an amazing feat that the birds have to complete just to eat.
My next task of mowing at the golf course was to mow the fairways. While mowing something caught my attention above me. I looked up and it was a group of Pelicans flying in the V formation flying just right above the trees. In the V, there had to be at least 50 pelicans. I stopped to watch them fly by. It really was a beautiful site.
